Hopefully this isn’t news to you, but us Aussies are all stuck in Australia for quite some time (thanks to COVID) and it doesn’t have to be a bad thing. We’ve noticed most blogs have been showcasing some of the beautiful places in Australia you can visit. However, we haven’t seen anyone speak about the foods you can only get here or would find hard to source elsewhere. So lets get started on what food can you only get in Australia!
1. Meat Pie
You’d be surprised to know, meat pies are hard to find in some other countries. They mainly seem to sell sweet pies. The Aussie meat pie is a classic in our culture and there are so many varieties to pick from. You can find them in most bakeries and cafes and are a great on the go treat. Where would we recommend you get your next pie? Our choice would be Glenorie Bakery!
2. Tim Tam
I don’t think any biscuit will come close to beating the Aussie Tim Tam. You often here people who move overseas complaining about missing this one! Every Australian can describe this as a chocolate biscuit that is coated in a layer of chocolate and also has a hidden creamy chocolate center. Our favourite thing to do, is to drip it into a hot drink and enjoy the melted version!
3. Chicken Salt
Once you try chicken salt on your chips you can’t go back to regular salt. However, if you go overseas you will have to go back to your regular salt ways. Every take-away and cafe seems to have chicken salt in Australia these days and it’s easy to understand way. Here is a picture of some chips to make you hungry!
Lamingtons remind me of my school lunch box growing up. A delicious treat we have all grown up loving. It is a sponge cake dipped in chocolate and rolled in coconut and can be found in all supermarkets and many cafes in Australia. If you love chocolate and coconut flavours, this is your perfect treat.
5. Golden Gaytime
And last but not least, one dessert you can only get in Australia is the Golden Gaytime. I don’t think any other ice-cream comes close to this. It is perfect on a hot Australian day and all the flavours mixed together can’t be beaten. You’ll find vanilla and toffee ice-cream in the middle then it is dipped in chocolate and coated in biscuit crumbs. I might go get one right now.
While we are all stuck here in Australia, we should enjoy it and make the most of our time. Travel as far as you can around the country and enjoy the foods you can’t find anywhere else. Let us know if you have any other foods we should add to this list! We hope you enjoyed our blog on what food can you only get in Australia.
We’ve also recently been reading Matt Moran’s Australian Food book which has plenty of great Australian cooking ideas if you’re interested.
